NOTE: Over the weekend, the Mankato Free Press shared a July 13 story on Blakeslee Stadium that paints a clear picture of the stadium and its future.

When Blakeslee Stadium opened in 1962, it was among the first features on the hilltop campus of what was then known as Mankato State College.

Since then, the school has gone through two name changes – Mankato State University and Minnesota State University, Mankato – and Blakeslee still stands strong…if not a bit tired.

Who was Blakeslee?

In recent times, the football stadium, while viewed as having one of the best natural grass fields in the Midwest, has been a topic of comments, concerns and complaints.

With all due respect, any change may invoke the ol’ adage: “put your money where your mouth is.”

Minnesota State Mankato has one of the most attractive, well-designed and well-maintained campuses among comparable schools of size and funding. One look confirms that. Blakeslee is a landmark on campus, but replacement of the stadium has long been a priority.

Footing the bill for a $20 to $40 million stadium takes time, planning, and, frankly, help.
