On Thursday, Sept. 26, Minnesota State Mankato will be hosting “German FilmXChange”, a German film festival sponsored by the MNSU Department of World Languages and Cultures along with the University’s Film and Media Studies program. This event is sponsored by a partnership with five universities across the Midwest to promote German artists who were raised in a multicultural community. In addition to the movie screening, the directors of the films will be in attendance. At the conclusion of each film, the director will have a Q&A session with the audience.

The first film is titled “ All of a Sudden”, directed by Aslı Özge. The film was selected to be apart of the Panorama section at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival. A preview of the film was described as “ a dark thriller that also unspools as a scathing critique of the power of bourgeois superiority to triumph against all odds.” This movie will start at 6 p.m. in the Wiecking Center auditorium (WC 220).

The second film of the night is called “Marry Me.”, by Emre Erkem. A brief preview of this movie is as follows. “Eternal Love? Forget about it! But, what if suddenly, as a convinced single, you would need to stage a Bollywood-style wedding and not just as a guest but as the bride herself? And what if while pretending to marry your ex-boyfriend you would be unable to resist falling in love … with an innocent bystander?” This film will begin at 8:30 p.m. in the Wiecking Center auditorium (WC 220) following the first movie of the evening.

The goal of this event is to have students interact with the filmmakers to inspire them to find their own unique movie production cinematic style that addresses opposing viewpoints and incorporates social conflicts. The film will be spoken in German, however, there will be English subtitles. The event will start at 6 p.m. and conclude at 10 p.m. Check out these films for a better understanding of German film culture.
