Student Entrepreneurs Learn From The Pros

In celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW), Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) is hosting a variety of events to engage students in the world of innovation and creation.

The week of Nov. 18 through Nov. 24 is known around the world as Global Entrepreneurship Week. The CIE has eight events planned throughout the week to give students and the surrounding community the chance to experience the field of entrepreneurship.

“Global Entrepreneurship Week is an international celebration of innovators and job creators who launch startups that bring ideas to live, drive economic growth and expand human welfare,” said CIE Director Yvonne Cariveau, Ph.D.

Every November, community organizations participate in activities hosted by the CIE to promote their business and contribute to students interested in creating their own brand.

Cariveau said students of all majors should participate in events for Global Entrepreneurship Week.

Unless stated elsewhere, the Global Entrepreneurship Week events will be at the Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, 424 N. Riverfront Drive, in Downtown Mankato. For transportation, the campus and surrounding community can take Bus Route 7 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Schedule of Events:

Monday, Nov. 18, 4:30 to 7 p.m. – China Town Hall: Via video broadcast, attendees will watch George Stephanopoulos moderating a discussion pertaining to today’s political climate and the impact it has on businesses around the world. This will then be followed by a panel addressing the trade relationship between China and the state of Minnesota.

Monday, Nov. 18, 5:30 to 7 p.m. – Startup Smart (SBDC): This workshop offers students the opportunity to obtain a general background of starting your own business. Whether you are starting from the ground up, or are in the middle of your entrepreneurship journey, the CIE is providing various resources available to people in all stages of their innovation process.

Tuesday, Nov. 19, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. – In an event titled “Mogwai Moments”, two local entrepreneurs will talk about persevering through their darkest times.

Tuesday, Nov. 19, 5:30 to 7 p.m. – The Big Ideas Challenge Kick-Off: This event gives the public a chance to meet past Big Ideas finalists with any questions or advice they seek for their future.

The Big Ideas Challenge is a competition that gives Minnesota State University, Mankato students and recent alumni the platform to present a business plan for the potential of a cut of $15,000 in prizes, given the following Spring semester. This session will also provide the rules and guidelines for the 2020 competition.

Wednesday, Nov. 20, 6 to 8 p.m. – Check out a screening of an award-winning, comedic film, “The Biggest Little Farm.” The film will be followed by a panel about agricultural innovation in sustainable farming with two local sustainable agriculture experts.

Thursday, Nov. 21, 4 to 5:30 p.m. – Show Me the Money: This workshop consists of local experts who will explain how people with great ideas can find startup funding.

Thursday, Nov. 21, 6 to 7 p.m. – All participants in the ” Show me the Money” workshop will then have the opportunity to pitch their idea in five minutes for a chance to win $500 in a Pitch Competition.

Friday, Nov. 22, 10 to 11:30 a.m. – Better Business Bureau (BBB) Workshop: The Better Business Bureau (BBB) will present an interactive event based on input from their customers.
