MNSU Student Resource Facebook Group

RETURN TO inSIDER

In the Fall of 2017, when I was a senior in high school, there was a Minnesota State University, Mankato, Class of 2022 Facebook Page for incoming students to primarily find roommates for the dorms.

What the group members didn’t know was that it was run by a company that tried to make students pay for a program to find roommates.

At the beginning of 2018, the group was shut down by Facebook after complaints from students and parents that a Minnesota State University, Mankato Facebook Group was scamming group members into buying their “premium” service to find roommates.

Once the group was shut down, I was disappointed. I wanted to find roommates but I didn’t have anywhere to do so. Then an idea popped into my head. I could create a Facebook Group. I made one for my mother’s cancer journey, so I knew how to make one.

In early April, I made a new Minnesota State University, Mankato, Class of 2022 Facebook Page, and invited the people that I was friends with from the old group to join the new group.

Over time, the group grew as students invited their friends to join and find their own roommates, or simply make friends.

The group was called “Minnesota State University, Mankato, Class of 2022 Facebook Page” until the group grew to 1500 members. It became clear that this group was used by more people than the Class of 2022. Students started to sell and buy textbooks, sublease apartments and share events going on around campus.

The name was changed around a year after the group was created. The name was changed to the “MNSU Student Resource Group.”

Currently, the group has over 1800 members, a majority of who are students. There are some faculty and prospective students in the group as well.

The group has subcategories to find exactly what you are looking for. These include Buying/Selling, Roommate Search, Questions, Sub-Leasing and Event or Recognized Student Organization (RSO) Promotion.

The two major uses of the group are buying and selling textbooks at a reduced rate, and finding roommates and/or subleasers.

In addition, I personally monitor all incoming requests to join the group. In general, only current/prospective students and faculty at Minnesota State University, Mankato are accepted into the group. This allows for less spam as well as reduced inappropriate activity.

All students are welcome to submit a request to be accepted into the group.
