After a successful trial run of the event last year, Galentine’s Day is back and better than ever. The Women’s Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato is hosting its second annual Galentine’s Day event on Feb. 13, – the day before Valentine’s day – from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in CSU 245.

Brunch food such as waffles, mini quiches and mock mimosas will be provided. While enjoying the brunch buffet, students can take part in crafts including creating paper roses, making paper fortune tellers, bead making, coloring sheets of famous women’s political figures, and the hit craft of last year, mini glitter messenger bottles.

The term “Galentine’s Day” was created by the energetic, happy-go-lucky character Leslie Knope, from the TV show Parks and Recreation.

In season two of the series, Leslie Knope invites her girlfriends out to brunch and give them presents, (most are handmade), to celebrate girl friendship.

Angela Buzay, the President of Mankato Students for Reproductive Freedom, a co-host of Galentine’s Day 2020, shares what the day before Valentine’s Day symbolizes in the feminist movement.

“A lot of feminist activism revolves around oppressive and tough subjects. But Feb. 13 is one day where girls can just get together and support one another.”
