The MavLankans are hosting their first official “Signature Night” on Feb. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m., in the CSU Ballroom. The event is titled “ABIMANAYA”, in English meaning, “The Pride of Sri Lanka.”

This event is part of a series of continent and country “Signature Nights,” sponsored by the Kearney International Center.

With several sold out all-you-can-eat buffets, the MavLankans are excited to share their culture, traditions and most importantly food, with the campus community once again, but this time, on a larger scale.

Enushka Beruwlage, the event coordinator for MavLankans, shared his main goal for this Sri Lankan Signature Night.

‘We are and were not looking for a profit. We wanted to raise money to create a perfect night for our guests.

With an expanded budget from the help of the Kearney International Center, a majority of the funds were spent on the authentic “Ceylon Cuisine” menu. Portion of the budget has been set aside for decorations and artistic performances.

Tickets are $10 for students, $12 for non-students, $6 for children 6-12 and free admission is provided to children under the age of 6.

Rukshan Vidana Gamage, the secretary for MavLankans, explained that people often don’t know where Sri Lanka is. His personal goal for “The Pride of Sri Lanka” event is to raise awareness about the culture and traditions of his home.

‘We want to let people know that there is an island that has a variety of things that you couldn’t see see anywhere else.’

RUKSHAN VIDANA GAMAGE, Secretary for MavLankans

Gamage described his Sri Lankan home as offering a wide range of climates and terrains including deserts, forests, beaches and mountains despite the fact that the island is only one-third of the size of Minnesota.

Pineapple Curry

Among evening menu items is MavLankans homemade pineapple curry. A popular regional food of Sri Lanka, pineapple curry is a delicious blend of sweet and spicy flavors.
