You’ll have about 30 minutes or more to listen to some audio stories produced by youth from Minnesota and the rest of the country. The sounds and voices in these stories are captured using the same kind of equipment you’re using to interview veterans. The stories are edited with Pro-Tools (or a similar program). In other words, if you have a story to tell and are willing to work hard, you could do something like this!

Please listen to 3-5 stories. Use a piece of paper to write down the name of the story you heard, where you heard it (from which website below), and two things you liked about the way the story was told.

Hello All,

One of your projects this week will be to create a short audio piece using Pro Tools–probably the most popular audio editing software out there. Pro-Tools allows you to mix sounds together in all kinds of interesting ways–putting music under a voice, for example, or adding the sound of footsteps and a closing door to a story you’ve recorded. In camp, we’ll cover the following topics so you can produce an audio story with Pro-Tools.

1) Organizing your sound files in a folder

2) Creating a Pro-Tools session

3) Importing sound to Pro-Tools

4) Multi-track editing–and creating tracks

5) Basic audio editing tools

6) Adjusting volume levels (and creating fades)

The above should be enough to help you create your short story–after your project is complete, we’ll discuss

7) Bouncing the final project to disk

 Turning project into mp3

Most of the topics discussed are also detailed in this excellent tutorial. You’ll notice the tutorial is for an older version of Pro-Tools but almost everything is the same–it just looks somewhat different.

Hello All,

One of your first tasks at Radio Camp is to do a scavenger hunt of sorts. You have about 45 minutes to explore at least four community stations from the links below. Please make sure one of the stations you look at is KMSU. Also notice that the Ampers link gives you 12 possible community radio stations here in Minnesota.

KMSU

WFMU (New York)

WOJB (Rural Wisconsin)

Ampers–Independent Public Radio in Minnesota

As you explore these stations, search for the items below. Please write down your findings on a sheet of paper so we can share them as a group. Ideally, what you find will come from a variety of stations–in other words, try not to have all your findings from KMSU, for example.

Two radio shows you think you’d enjoy hearing (write down the names, stations, and a quick thing the program uses to describe itself)

Two interesting descriptions or phrases the radio stations use to describe themselves

Two things that really surprise you about these stations

Two ways community members are encouraged to get involved with producing radio for these stations

One program that connects directly to youth issues or involves youth in making the program

We hope you enjoy beginning to explore the unique world of community radio.
