How to use your winter break to job hunt.

So, you’re graduating and need to find a job. The job search process can be overwhelming and daunting. Here at the Career Development Center we provide you with the resources needed to help make this next step in your life as easy as possible! The end of the year is a great time to job hunt as employers look to fill positions in the new year. If you don’t know where to begin, here are some great first steps.

Connect with Others and NETWORK! (

Use your time during winter break wisely and connect with others. Most jobs are not posted on websites, rather they are found through word of mouth via connections. You will need to do most of the networking and cold-calling to find opportunities. If they are in need of a person they may make that happen for you. Therefore, it is so important to contact employers or other connections to market yourself.

  • Join LinkedIn ( and get active
    • Connect with previous employers, professors, and classmates and let them know what you are looking for in case they have insight. Be specific, it might spur them to think of someone they know in that field!
    • Find others in your network and where they are employed
  • Informational interviewing (
    • This is a great way to learn more about a position or company. It can sometimes lead to more interviews and job opportunities.
  • Research employers (
    • Doing research is very important during the job search process. This helps you figure out if you and the employer would be a good fit.
    • Keep a journal and write down the companies’ missions and values, type of company, the history of the company, location and some facts. When you go into an interview, knowing these things can help you feel more prepared and they can see you have an interest in what they do.
  • Join professional organizations
    • When you join professional organizations, they will usually have forums, articles and career postings all for you to take advantage of.
    • Also, get active in their leadership positions, this will help you get recognized in that community and may lead to significant job opportunities.
  • Volunteer
    • Connect with your mentor or supervisor and others that you volunteer with, tell them what jobs you are searching for, and they might connect you with someone in that field or know of a position opening.
    • Also, ask them if they would be able to be a reference for you if you feel that you’ve had a good working relationship with them while volunteering.
