Celebrate Black History Month

African American Affairs at Minnesota State University, Mankato is celebrating Black History Month by hosting several events throughout the month of February. Students and the surrounding community are invited to participate and learn more about the celebration of Black History Month.

FEB. 1 TO FEB. 29: Pub 500 Fundraiser

African American Affairs and Pub 500 are hosting a fundraiser for the Multicultural Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

For every entree purchased, (with the coupon below), during the month of February, Pub 500 will donate $5 to the Multicultural Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato. And, as an extra bonus, Pub 500 provides a FREE dessert of your choice.

FEB. 7: Stomper’s Cinema: Harriet – Film Screening

The campus and surrounding community are invited to attend a screening of the movie Harriet, the “extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes, whose courage, ingenuity and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history.”

This event is sponsored by African American Affairs, Stomper’s Cinema and Greater Mankato Diversity Council.

FEB. 8: #ForTheCulture Expo

Join the Minnesota State University, Mankato Black Student Union at their second annual #ForTheCulture Expo.

Attendees can expect to immerse themselves in “black excellence in fashion, music, hair and food.” Tickets are available for purchase for $7.

FEB. 11: The Talk: Race in America – Film Screening & Panel Discussion

Facebook Event Description: The Talk – Race in America is a documentary about the increasingly necessary conversation taking place in homes and communities across the country between parents of color and their children, especially sons, about how to behave if they are ever stopped by the police. After we view the documentary, participants will hear firsthand from Mankato community leaders and parents about their experience having “The Talk” with their children.

FEB. 13: Black Card Revoked Family Style!

Facebook Event Description: Join African American Affairs for a family-style version of the game Black Card Revoked! This fun and nostalgia-filled game celebrating American black popular culture. It’s bound to invoke hilarious debates among young and old alike. Come check it out but don’t get your black card revoked! Must present a valid MavCard to participate.

FEB. 27 & FEB. 28: 44th Annual Dr. Michael T. Fagin Pan African Conference

The end of Black History Month is celebrated with the 44th Annual Dr. Michael T. Fagin Pan African Conference. This two-day conference “will focus on the urgency of voters’ rights and voters’ education: past, present, and future.” Registration is available here: http://www.mnsu.edu/panafricanconference/

FEB. 29: Silent Party

Students can celebrate the final day of Black History Month with African American Affairs at their second Silent Party of the year. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Contact kenneth.reid@mnsu.edu for more information.
