CSU’s Serendipity Music Series Announces Fall 2018 Schedule

Street Corner Serenades Offer Music Ranging from Beatbox to Johnny Cash

Students are invited to enjoy “street corner serenades” in and around the Centennial Student Union as the CSU Serendipity Music Series offers a lineup of two-hour, mid-day performances throughout the fall semester.

The performances are free and open to the public.

“Some of you may have already heard our opening week performance with blues piano man Tom Hunter,” said Lenny Koupal, coordinator of the ongoing music series. “We have more to come with a fall lineup that includes hip-hop and beatboxing, something called jamgrass, a blues hall of fame guitarist and even a tribute to Johnny Cash.”

The series continues next week with the Wednesday, Sept 12, return of the EVERETT SMITHSON BAND planned on the campus mall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Everett wails on the harmonica and his wife, Kathy, is a crazy good zydeco-style accordion player,” Koupal said. “They headline a New Orleans style blue band that brings the Mississippi Delta sound upstream to Minnesota. It’s a awesome sound we are pleased to bring back to campus.”

Billed as a mid-week, mid-day spotlight of Minnesota musicians, the Serendipity Music Series offers the campus lunch crowd a chance to experience a range of music genres.

“I like to call them street corner serenades,” Koupal said. “Passers-by can stop and listen in between classes or grab something to eat and take a music break. The series offers another pleasant surprise that fits in well with the CSU’s House of Serendipity theme.”

In addition to the Everett Smithson Band, other performance dates slated for the fall semester include. All performances are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Homecoming Week Monday, Sept. 24: BRIZ & LADY will perform from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Campus Mall as part of opening Homecoming Week events. Along with favorite covers, the married duet offers original songs that mixes pop, beatbox and hip-hop. (Rain Site is the CSU Lincoln Lounge)

150th Week Event Tuesday, Oct. 2: GALACTIC COWBOY ORCHESTRA offers a highly-talent gathering of Minnesota musicians that offer a range of music labeled as something called JamGrass Art-Rock. Visit their website for a full grasp of their music or, better yet, come hear them live on Oct. 2 playing outside on the campus mall (rain site is the CSU Lower Level)

Wednesday, October 17: PAUL “MAYO” MAYASICH is a member of the Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame. His blues guitar skills will school audiences on the finer art of capturing the blues.

Wednesday, Nov. 14: CHURCH OF CASH: Johnny Cash fans will get a chance to hear their favorite tunes from the Man in Black as the CSU welcomes Jayder Kalk performing in the CSU Lincoln Lounge.

Finals Week Tuesday, Dec. 11: OK FACTOR returns to the Serendipity Music Series as part of the CSU’s Final Week StressBusters. The violin-cello duo will be in the CSU Hearth Lounge to help soothe the nerves and clear the head during Finals Week.

Plans are underway for a new series of Serendipity Music Series performances for Spring 2019.  Watch for more information!
