The Bird has landed. Electric scooters now join self-powered longboards and bicycles as the latest motorized transportation on campus.

Currently, 50 of the Bird scooters are available on campus with 50 more planned in the coming as part of a cooperative effort between the University and Student Government. The GPS scooters are geo-fenced and operate only within a designated area that includes the campus, U-Square and Summit Apartments. Designated “Bird Nest” parking areas exist within that perimeter, but scooters are being left for collection throughout the area.

Early reports since Aug. 31 show more than 2,500 rides recorded with over 2,300 miles traveled by nearly 1,000 riders.

How It Works

  • First download the Bird app which is free from the app store, next set up an account and link a payment method.
  • After setting everything up, the app will provide riders tutorials on how to start a ride, giving information on rules and regulations on campus like slow zones, and a suggestion of wearing a helmet when riding.
  • On the app there is more available information to riders and contains a map of how far the scooters can go.

To start a ride, you will have to scan a QR code on the handlebar of the scooter, it’s $1 to start and .39 cents after that. To ride, Place hands on each side of the scooter bar, put your dominate leg on the scooter and then push 1 to 2 kicks to get the scooter rolling.

When first starting, take it slow and learn how to break. To increase speed, use the throttle and push down. The scooter goes up to 15 mph and 8 mph in the slow zones.
