Scott Olson, president of Winona State University and former Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Minnesota State Mankato, is the unanimous choice as new Chancellor of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.

Minnesota State Mankato is the largest university within the Minn State system which also includes Winona State.

Olson, one of two finalists for the Chancellor position, was selected by the system board in a unanimous vote to replace Devinder Malhotra, who retires as chancellor this summer. Olson will take over on Aug. 1 as the next Chancellor.

Before becoming Winona State’s president in 2012, Olson served from 2003 as Minnesota State Mankato’s vice president for academic affairs. In 2005, he served two months as acting president while President Richard Davenport underwent and recovered from kidney transplant surgery, according to William Lass, in his 2018 sesquicentennial history book on the University.

Olson also served as the system’s interim vice chancellor for academic and student affairs.
