Queer Prom Offers Second Chance For Cherished Memories

by EMMA GABBERT, CSU Public Relations Assistant

For the first time in school history, a coalition of four recognized student organizations has created an event called Queer Prom.

This event is meant to give college students the “high school prom experience” they may have missed due to judgment from classmates for belonging to the LGBT community.

A partnership between Black Motivated Women (BMW), Sexuality and Gender Equality (SAGE), Black Legendary and Queer (BLAQ), and the Black Student Union (BSU), these four clubs are coming together create a night filled with fun and providing a space for LGBT students to express themselves.

Queer Prom will be Saturday, Nov. 9, 7 to 11 p.m., in CSU 253/254/255. This event is free and open to students as well as the community, however, registration is preferred. You can register at the link below.

Since this event is funded by the organizations alone, they are hosting a fundraiser at Chipotle in University Square on Nov. 4 from 4 to 8 p.m. All proceeds go to directly toward Queer Prom. Donations are also being accepted.

Taylor Kueng, the President of Black Motivated Women, said she created this event for students who were excluded from traditional high school memories.

“I think it’s important for students to have the typical experiences that most students have in high school. You miss out a lot when you aren’t offered those opportunities.”

Kirby Crow, a junior at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and the secretary for SAGE, shares the impact this event has on the student body as a whole.

“It’s a night to celebrate your story and the journey of LGBTQ+ love and rights. It’s also an opportunity for LGBTQ+ students from different majors to meet and socialize.”
