The Veterans Day observance honoring the long-standing presence of veterans as students, staff and alumni returns Thursday, Nov. 11, with the noon RSVP luncheon in the Centennial Student Union Ballroom.

The noon luncheon program that includes the ceremonial saber cutting of the Veterans Day cake will be in the Centennial Student Union. RSVP for the event was required.

Tim Adams, retired Naval officer and helicopter pilot, currently serves as military and veteran success coordinator at Minnesota State Mankato. Planning the annual observance, Adams said the event honors the Maverick veteran community who have served and protected our national freedom.

“Since the end of World War One in 1918, the 11th of November has been a very special day. For more than 100 years, celebrations have been held to honor those who have served their nation in times of war and peace. For the Maverick veteran community, it has always been a special day as well,” Adams said. “Since it comes just before Thanksgiving and Finals, it is a special time to join together as friends and pay tribute to those young and old veterans. One of the first student groups on campus, with a history stretching back to its founding by Civil War veterans, the Maverick Student Veterans has long served the academic and emotional needs of students.

“No one longs for peace more than those who have shared the heavy price of warfare. The young men and women who serve honorably, and then return home to study here at Minnesota State Mankato should hold a special place in our hearts, and we are proud to have the chance to honor and celebrate this Veterans Day together,” Adams added.
