Campus Food Programs Help Students Avoid Going Hungry When the Cupboards Are Bare

Food insecurity is a real problem among college students. Even at Minnesota State Mankato, the college dollar doesn’t always stretch far enough to keep the stomach from growling. Fortunately, various services, programs, and weekly events are in place to assist hungry Mavericks.

MAVERICK FOOD PANTRY is a joint initiative by Student Government, the Kearney International Center and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion that provides students free perishable and non-perishable food as well as toiletries. Through the pantry website, students can arrange a time to get a bag of groceries. The Maverick Food Pantry is open four days a week in Carkoski Common 142. Hours are Mondays and Wednesdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesdays, 5 to 7 p.m.; and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

MAVERICK FOOD GARDEN is a new program started through the Women’s Center that provides fresh veggies and other produce to the Maverick Food Pantry. Students wishing to “pay it forward” can volunteer to assist in the garden located by Carkoski Commons.

SWIPE OUT HUNGER is an initiative by University Dining (Sodexo) and Minnesota State Mankato. Students request swipes which can be added to their MavCARD and used toward meals at the University Dining Center. To apply, students fill out the Swipe Out Hunger Meal Request Form.

FREE FARMERS MARKET will be offered to students on Monday, Sept. 12, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Crossroads Campus Ministry parking lot located next to the Performing Arts building. Students will be able to get a bag of fruit and vegetables at the event.

LUNCH FOR A BUCK is offered each Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Crossroads Campus Ministry. Donated food and services allow guests to enjoy a full lunch for one dollar.

Here is a list of various campus and Mankato area Food Resources available to students.
