Serving at a polling place as an election judge may be the best way to get involved in the election process according to Kristy Maes with the Blue Earth County elections office.

It’s also a way to earn some money.

“It’s a great opportunity to learn about the whole process from the inside out,” Maes said. “It’s a great opportunity to get involved, learn a little bit and get paid for it.”

Student still have plenty of time to become an election judge for the November election.

“We would like everybody to get signed up within the next couple of weeks so we can make sure the training is finished.”

Workers would also be paid for the training sessions if their work election day polling locations.

Several duties are available for assuring the smooth operation of polling stations. Added staff will be needed this year to ensure a safe polling environment during COVID-19.

Maes said the pandemic is creating a greater need for election judges.

Absolutely everybody is very engaged in this election and we expect to turn out to be quite a bit higher,” she said. “With COVID, that just adds some of the duties and responsibilities in the polling place. We want to make sure that we keep everybody as safe as possible.”
