Handshake is a very powerful tool provided to you by the University. If you know what LinkedIn is, Handshake works in the same way except for it’s geared towards college students and helping you find that first job out of college. Not only that, but it can also help you find your summer internship.

You start off by creating a profile about yourself. It’s able to pull things such as your GPA, Major and Minor and any achievements you’ve earned so far in college. It does it very fast and very slick. There is also an area where you can put in all of your work and volunteer experience as well as various organizations you are apart of. This is really your chance to brag about yourself so make sure to put in as much as possible!

What the tabs look like in Handshake

Once you have the profile all set up you’ll get a list of tabs personalized for you. Jobs, Events and Q&A might be the ones you’ll use the most and here’s why. The jobs tab is very good at organizing jobs that students in your major are in or are interested in joining. You can also choose filters for your needs. Such as location, part-time, full-time, internship e.t.c. Events will let you know what’s happening on our campus and nearby in regards to jobs. Such as the Career & Internship Expo coming up on October 15 & 16. Lastly, Q&As specialize in questions that other students have in your major. For example, for my major one of the top questions is, “How do I break into journalism?”

The best option might just be the “Career Center” tab. This connects you right with your on-campus Career and Development Center. Where you can get help with just about anything. In this tab, you can schedule appointments for things such as getting help with job searches, internships, mock interviews, interviewing tips, resume help and so much more.

If you’re looking for more career help or have any questions about Handsake you can visit the Career Development Center at 209 Wigley Administration Center, Monday – Friday 12 pm-3 pm.
