Extended Student Loan Freeze Offers Questions for the Future of Loan Repayment

Last week, President Biden extended the freeze on student loan payments until Sept. 1, 2022. While this mostly impacts former students, Craig Sanderson, director of financial aid at Minnesota State Mankato, said it certainly is a complex matter.

“While it provided a significant benefit and much-needed relief to borrowers during a challenging time in our history, the continued extensions to the freeze on student loan repayment stir up other questions,” Sanderson said. “What will happen on September 1?  With the current debt forgiveness activities and proposals going on, should borrowers continue making payments on their indebtedness?

“At some point, many expect student loan repayment will begin,” Sanderson added. “When that time comes, will new initiatives be in place to help borrowers successfully reenter repayment?  It will be interesting to see how our country will address these questions in the months ahead.”
