MINNESOTA FIRST: Handball Club Sweeps All Divisions at State Singles Handball Championship

The Maverick Handball Club made history after capturing titles in all divisions at the Minnesota State Handball Championships on Nov. 18-19 at Lifetime Fitness in Fridley.

Maverick Coach Mike Wells said it was the first time in Minnesota Handball history that one team swept the championships.

In the Men’s Open Division, three of the four semi-finalists were Mavericks. Junior Luis Mendez defeated the tournament’s top seed Luke Sandy 21-15, 19-21, 11-5 to make the semifinals before falling to teammate graduate student Shane Dunne 21-7, 21-6. On the other side of the bracket, freshman Mark Doyle continued to have an impressive season. Doyle defeated pro qualifier Ryan Pesch 21-19, 21-6. In the all-Maverick final, Doyle defeated Dunne 21-5, 21-15 in a match much closer than the final score indicates.

In the Men’s A Division, Maverick junior David Ceaglske put on an impressive two-handed display to bring the championship to Mankato. Ceaglske defeated St. Paul’s Josiah Hakala 21-7, 21-14 after taking down the top seed in the semi-finals. Ceaglske is excited to move up to the open division at next year’s tournament. Also playing well in the A Division for the Mavericks was semi-finalist sophomore Joseph Lallier. Clodagh Munroe crossed over to the men’s division to win the consolation championship defeating Maverick Alumnus Kevin Pattain 18-21, 21-13, 11-6.
