Proposed Student Fee Increase Explained; Referendum on the April 8-9 Student Ballot

Maverick Athletic Director Kevin Buisman addressed proposed athletic fee at the April 3 forum that included a question and answer session with Student Government candidates Roshit Niraula for president and Rebekka Jay for vice president.

Among items on this year’s Student Government election ballot is the Student Athletics and Student Activity Fee Referendum. Online balloting will be Monday and Tuesday, April 8-9, at mnsu.edu/voting.

At the April 3 election forum in the CSU Hearth Lounge, Kevin Buisman, Mavericks Athletic Director, explained that the proposed athletic fee increase of $1 per credit hour would offset excessive inflation, particularly with Maverick travel, that has impacted the program. Without the proposed budget funding, Athletics would need to increase fundraising efforts and student athletics’ out-of-pocket expenses.

Other decisions could include reducing student seating at hockey games in order to generate revenue from general admission ticket sales.

During the forum, Student Government President Sierra Roiger shared he proposed Student Activity Fee increase of $1.04 per credit hour. The increase support operational and programming cost for various student programs such as Student Events Team, Maverick Food Pantry, Campus Recreation and Kearney International Center to name a few.
