Minnesota State Mankato announces the retirement of Rick Straka, Vice President for Finance and Administration, effective February 6, 2024.

After a distinguished career spanning over three decades within the MinnState system, Rick’s decision brings a mix of emotions as the University acknowledges his significant contributions.

An integral part of the MinnState system since 1987, Straka has served in his current role as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) since 2006. During that time, he has been instrumental in ensuring the institution’s financial stability and positioning it for future growth.

President Edward Inch expressed his appreciation for Rick Straka’s contributions, stating, “Rick has been a pillar of leadership and dedication to Minnesota State Mankato. His tireless efforts have played a crucial role in our success, from securing funding for vital projects to guiding us through challenging times. We are grateful for his many accomplishments and the lasting impact he has made on our institution.”

Throughout his tenure at Minnesota State Mankato, Straka’s notable highlights include leading successful legislative bonding initiatives, securing funding for important projects such as Phase 1 of the Armstrong Hall replacement, and supporting the growth and success of Maverick Athletics.

During the pandemic, Rick played a key role in the university’s COVID-19 response. He also has been pivotal in overseeing the distribution of student aid payments and contributing to campus development initiatives that include the construction of new buildings.

Straka has been a key member of several system task forces, including the NextGen CFO Advisory group and the Finance Resource Allocation and Policy group. Locally, he serves on the Feeding Our Community Partners Board and the YMCA Endowment Committee, and he has made an indelible mark through his involvement with the United Way Board of Directors, YMCA Board of Directors, Greater Mankato Growth, and Leadership Mankato Area, among many others.

Nationally, Rick has served in many volunteer leadership roles over the years for the Society of College and University Planning (SCUP) and was recognized with a Distinguished Service Award for his volunteer efforts.

The search for a new vice president will begin immediately, with the aim of filling the position by the end of the Fall 2023 semester. During the transition period, Straka will focus on completing ongoing projects, including the budget model redesign, the Armstrong Hall project, and assisting in the onboarding of the next CFO.
