WHAT IS IT? Student Allocations Committee Helps Determine How To Spend Your Student Fees

WHAT IS IT? is a series that seeks to explain aspects of student life and campus life at Minnesota State Mankato.

THE STUDENT ALLOCATIONS COMMITTEE

The Student Allocations Committee (SAC) plays a key role in establishing and use of student fees. Maximum fees for all state colleges and universities are set by the Minnesota State Board of Trustees. SAC working on behalf of and with Student Government, recommend how those fees should be allocated and spent.

SAC conducts hearings to determine what to recommend to Student Government for its consideration. The allocation and per credit hour rate plans endorsed by Student Government are submitted to the University President through the Vice President for Student Affairs. The University President makes the final decision on rates and allocations.

In addition, SAC reviews and disperses up to $25,000 in yearly allocations made available to Recognized Student Organizations. RSOs may apply for funding to help defray travel and programming expenses.

Key SAC bullet points:

  • Up to nine members. Not more than three should be Student Government Senators. The membership is appointed by the Student Government leadership.
  • Chair and Vice Chair are elected from the SAC membership.
  • The Chair receives a $600 stipend for the year. The Vice Chair receives a $400 stipend.
  • Co-Advisors are the Centennial Student Union Business Manager and the CSU Director.
  • Meet weekly throughout the academic year.
  • Disperse Travel and Programming funds to student organizations throughout the year. Have up to $25,000 to allocate.
  • During the Spring Semester, SAC hears budget presentations from Student Activities Fund groups.
  • SAC makes recommendations to Student Government following the presentations on what they suggest should be allocated for the next fiscal year.
  • Ultimately the Student Government can accept, modify, or disregard the recommendations. Recommendations are made for each individual group, not necessarily in totality.
  • Throughout the year the Student Allocations Committee will handle any unusual requests which might arise related to SAF dollars. Again, they are primarily a recommending body to the Student Government.
