Through the Decades Is Theme as Fraternity and Sorority Recruitment Continues Aug. 25 to Aug. 28

Through the Decades is the 2022 recruitment theme as fraternities and sororities at Minnesota State Mankato seek to attract the interest of prospective members through their respective fellowship and sustaining mission.

With social events planned for Wednesday, Aug. 24, recruitment efforts by both fraternities and sororities will continue Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 25-28.

Formal Sorority Recruitment over those four days will be the primary way women join sororities during the 2022-2023 academic year.

A guided Fraternity Recruitment process will also be Aug. 25 through Aug. 22. This is an option for men, but most fraternity members join through an informal recruitment process throughout the course of the summer or early in the Fall or Spring semester.

Sorority Recruitment

Sororities at MSU take pride in the annual formal recruitment process that occurs each fall. Formal recruitment is the primary way to join a sorority. It is a four-night process dedicated to finding the best-fit sorority for the potential new member.

Those interested in joining should plan to participate in the entire process.  A Thursday night class, which may be in conflict with the first round of recruitment, is one of very few exceptions that may be granted to this, and those who have a Thursday night class should certainly plan to attend the Sorority Social on Wednesday night.  Those with other conflicts for Thursday, Friday, or Saturday should wait to participate in informal recruitment with chapters still recruiting after the formal process is completed.

Please note that this formal recruitment process is the primary way by which women join sororities at Minnesota State Mankato and anywhere else, for that matter.  Immediately following this process, a cap on chapter membership is set.  This means that, after Formal Recruitment, some chapters will not be recruiting any longer.  For the best chance to join a sorority, it is highly recommended that women participate in this process.

Below is a sample schedule of what Fall Formal Recruitment Weekend may look like.

  • Thursday:  Open House Round.  Visit each chapter for 30-45 minutes.
  • Friday:  Round 2.  Visit up to three chapters for 45-60 minutes.
  • Saturday: Preference Round. Visit up to two chapters for 60-90 minutes
  • Sunday: Bid Day.  Find out if you’ve been matched to a sorority, and start your adventure!

The optional Wednesday, Aug. 24, Social will be from 8 to 10 p.m. in CSU 245

The sorority community will host an informal, optional sorority social on the evening before formal recruitment begins.  While this is going on, Fraternity & Sorority Life Info Sessions will be available across the hall.  This event is free, and no commitment to formal recruitment is required.  It’s designed to be a come-and-go-as-you-please feel, so if you have class until 9 or have somewhere to be at 9, no problem!  Women who attend will have an opportunity to enjoy refreshments while mingling with members from our sororities and getting their questions answered.  If they haven’t decided to participate already, it’s often times this event that helps women decide to go through with the recruitment process.

Pre-Registration:

Sorority formal recruitment requires potential new members to pre-register online. This allows us to keep potential new members better informed. Potential new members can register through the day before formal recruitment, Wednesday, August 24th.

Fraternity Recruitment

Men may join a fraternity at any time after they have graduated from high school and committed to attending the University.  Many of our fraternities will be hosting events and recruiting new members throughout the course of the summer, leading up to the beginning of the Fall semester.

Chapters will also host informal recruitment events once the semester starts.  If a student, including a new, incoming student, finds a good fit, it is perfectly ok for him to join a fraternity.

A majority of men who join fraternities do so through Informal Recruitment.

FORMAL RECRUITMENT

Formal recruitment allows potential new members to meet each of the fraternities. The process is designed to ensure the best possible fit into a lifetime of brotherhood.

  • There is no registration fee
  • Three scholarships are available for dues through Formal Recruitment
  • Thursday, August 25th – Saturday, August 27th –  Structured House Tour Dates

Fraternity Meet & Greet

  • Monday, Aug. 22, Through the Decades Fraternity Recruitment Event from 5 to 9 p.m. University Dining Lawn
  • Wednesday, Aug. 24, Fraternity Social Recruitment Event

The fraternity community will host an informal, optional Fraternity Meet & Greet on the evening before structured recruitment begins.  While this is going on, Fraternity & Sorority Life Info Sessions will be available around the corner in CSU 253.  This event is free, and no commitment to structured recruitment is required.  It’s designed to a come-and-go-as-you-please feel, so if you have class until 7 or have somewhere to be at 7:30, no problem!  Men who attend will have an opportunity to enjoy refreshments while mingling with members from our fraternities and getting their questions answered.  If they haven’t decided to participate already, it’s often times this event that helps guys decide to go through with the recruitment process, whether structured or informal.

If you have any questions regarding the fraternity formal recruitment process, email the community recruitment counselors via email, at maverickfsl@mnsu.edu.

Any man joining a fraternity must be a Minnesota State Mankato student (or incoming student) who has graduated from high school and who has a minimum 2.5 GPA.  The GPA used for determining eligibility is the cumulative high school GPA for any student who has not yet taken any college courses since graduating from high school.  For any student who has taken college courses since graduating from high school, the cumulative college GPA is considered.
