The Department of Music and Entertainment Industries announces a Fall 2023 lineup of 21 concerts and performances as part of its ongoing Performance Series. Most are FREE to Minnesota State Mankato students with four special concert performances at Hooligans in Mankato.
Taylor Nixt, Maverick alumna, returns to Minnesota State Mankato as Campus Dietitian helping students eat healthy, make wise choices and balance their diet and their lifestyle to be successful. She offers one-on-one counseling on a wide range of health or nutrition-related goals. Taylor also offers individual tours of dining options on campus to help students make good choices that meet their needs and lifestyle.
A new, but not-so-new face heading up University Catering is Naomi McKinney. A previous executive chef with University DIning, Naomi returns from a one-year hiatus at Catering Director. Those years of experience planning meals now provide valuable assistance in planning smooth and successful events on and off campus.
Dr. Mohammad Alam, named among the top 2 percent of scientists in all fields, has been named dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, at Minnesota State Mankato effective Wednesday, Aug. 2.
Dr. Seung Bach is the new dean of the College of Business at Minnesota State Mankato’s College of Business effective July 1. He previously was interim dean of the School of Business and Public Administration at California State Bakersfield.
Sarah Anderson, 19, a junior at Minnesota State Mankato, was crowned the 2023 Miss Minnesota USA on Sunday, July 30, at the annual pageant in Burnsville.
Anderson from Maple Grove, Minn., will now represent Minnesota at the 72nd MISS USA pageant in September at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nev.
Maverick Athletics has announced its all-female list of 2023 Hall of Fame inductees in the student-athlete and team categories as the University celebrates the 50th anniversary of Title IX. Maverick HOF ceremonies and the dedication of a “Nine for IX” display will be Friday, Oct. 6, during Homecoming Week.
Shane Zylstra, Maverick football single season (2019) and career record-holder for pass receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, suffered a serious knee injury during Detroit Lions training camp. Early prognosis suspected the injury was season ending for Zylstra with an expected six-month recovery.

The Theatre and Dance Department will continue auditions for the hit musical RENT on the first day of classes. Monday, Aug. 21. Auditions will be in the Performing Arts Center. Students auditioning will need to prepare one of the songs from RENT.
Jenny Vetter, Maverick Women’s Soccer standout, has signed a professional contract with the Racing Power Football Club in Portugal. The former Maverick reports to the team in July.
Four women with the Aviation Program are competing in the annual Air Race Classic June 20-23. The 46th annual race features all women aviators flying 2500-miles from North Dakota to Florida. First checkpoint for the 2023 race is Mankato.
The demand for highly skilled commercial pilots is being answered by Minnesota State Mankato’s nationally-accredited Aviation Program that shares partnerships with leading airlines. In keeping up with the industry, the program this fall offers drone flight instruction, expanded jetliner simulation training, and aerobatics training for the programs 600 students. A Fall 2024 rollout is expected for a new online master’s degree in Aviation Safety.
The Theatre and Dance Department at Minnesota State Mankato announces its 11-show lineup for the 2023-24 main stage and studio performances. Student tickets are $5 per production.
Teddy Blueger, four-year standout for Mavericks’ Men’s Hockey from 2012-2016, became the second Maverick to be on a Stanley Cup champion team. Traded to the Golden Knights in March, Blueger appeared in six games during the team’s playoff run with a goal and an assist.
Minnesota State Mankato announces the retirement of Rick Straka, Vice President for Finance and Administration, effective February 6, 2024. Straka has served in his current role as Chief Financial Officer since 2006. The search for a new vice president seeks to fill the position by the end of the Fall 2023 semester.
